Relief from TMJ Disorders at Alpharetta Comprehensive Dentistry

Your Dentist and TMJ Therapy

The Temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the hinged joint on either side of your lower jaw (mandible) that connects your jaw to the bone on the side of your head (temporal bone). When your jaw moves up and down, or side to side, you are using these joints, along with surrounding muscles, to control this movement.

  • Your dentist will evaluate TMJ function at each checkup visit.
  • Dentists are specially trained to manage problems with these joints, or Temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Patients that suffer from TMD often complain of these symptoms:

  • Soreness and pain in the jaw, neck or face, especially upon wakening.
  • Daily headaches or frequent migraine headaches.
  • Limited movement, stiffness, grating or painful clicking of the jaw joint when opening or closing.
  • Changes in the way the upper and lower teeth come together.

Causes of TMD can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint, but common factors include stress, teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism), trauma, obstructive sleep disorders (sleep apnea) or improper bite.

Night Guard Therapy

A standard part of therapeutic management of TMJ symptoms is night guard therapy. Also called a bite guard, this oral appliance is a plastic guard that fits over the upper or lower teeth to separate the teeth and allow the jaw joints and muscles to relax. They are usually worn during sleep, especially in cases related to bruxism, as most teeth grinding and clenching occurs while the patient is asleep.

Dr. Minniti has had extensive postdoctoral training in management of TMJ & TMD conditions.
